When Medicare May Cover Dental Services
While routine dental care is excluded, Original Medicare may provide coverage under specific circumstances. This usually occurs if a dental procedure is performed during a hospital admission or if the dental service is directly linked to a covered medical treatment. Examples of such situations include:
An oral examination and necessary dental treatment prior to major medical procedures like a heart valve replacement, bone marrow transplant, organ transplant, or kidney transplant.
Treatment for a mouth infection, such as a tooth extraction, required before commencing cancer treatment.
Care for complications arising during treatment for head and neck cancer.
Understanding Costs for Covered Dental Services
For inpatient hospital services and stays where dental care is covered, the costs are structured. For days 1 to 60, a deductible of $1,676 applies. For days 61 to 90, the cost is $419 each day. From day 91 to 150, while utilizing 60 lifetime reserve days, the cost is $838 each day. After day 150, the individual is responsible for all costs.
For Medicare-covered dental services received in an outpatient setting, beneficiaries typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after meeting their Part B deductible. Additionally, a copayment may be required by the outpatient hospital or facility providing the service.
