Fezolinetant for Hot Flashes
Fezolinetant is a daily oral medication designed to reduce moderate to severe hot flashes by directly influencing the body’s temperature regulation system. This treatment is not suitable for individuals with liver or kidney issues, or those taking certain contraindicated medications. Regular liver function monitoring is typically recommended during treatment.
Low-Dose Antidepressants
Certain low-dose antidepressants, specifically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), can alleviate hot flashes, night sweats, and associated mood changes. Paroxetine is currently approved specifically for managing hot flashes, providing a dual benefit for those experiencing both physical symptoms and emotional shifts.
Gabapentin and Clonidine
Some medications are prescribed off-label to manage menopausal symptoms. Gabapentin, primarily an anticonvulsant, can offer modest relief from hot flashes. Similarly, clonidine, a blood pressure medication, is sometimes utilized to help control hot flashes, though its efficacy may vary compared to other nonhormonal options.
Preventing Bone Loss and Osteoporosis
The decline in estrogen levels during menopause increases the risk of bone density loss. Alongside calcium and vitamin D supplementation, healthcare providers may recommend prescription medications to preserve bone health. Common options include bisphosphonates, abaloparatide, raloxifene, calcitonin, denosumab, and romosozumab, which help slow bone loss and reduce fracture risks.
