Many popular chain restaurant meals contain surprisingly high levels of sodium, often exceeding recommended daily limits in a single serving. Health organizations advise adults to consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day, with an optimal goal of 1,500 mg. However, numerous menu items, including seemingly healthy options, can significantly surpass these amounts. Understanding which dishes are high in sodium is crucial for maintaining a balanced diet.
Texas Roadhouse
At Texas Roadhouse, the Bacon Cheeseburger contains a substantial 2,410 mg of sodium. This burger features bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion, served on a bun with steak fries and a pickle spear. Even more striking is the Grilled Shrimp Dinner (12 Shrimp), which packs an astonishing 4,520 mg of sodium, far exceeding the daily recommended intake.
Chili’s
Chili’s Buffalo Big Crispy Chicken Sandwich is another item with a high sodium count, reaching 3,400 mg. This dish consists of hand-battered crispy chicken tossed in Buffalo sauce, served with pickles, a side of house-made ranch, white cheddar mac & cheese, and fries, making it a very sodium-dense meal.
Domino’s
A single serving (1/8 of an XL pizza) of Domino’s Spicy Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza contains 1,410 mg of sodium. When considering side dishes, one order of Hot Buffalo Wings adds another 1,520 mg of sodium, highlighting how quickly sodium levels can accumulate even with smaller portions.
Applebee’s
Applebee’s Breadsticks with Alfredo Sauce are particularly high in sodium, with 2,570 mg per serving. Another item to note is the Hot Honey Glazed Chicken & Bacon Skillet, a sliced grilled chicken breast dish that contains 3,400 mg of sodium. Adding salad dressing to meals can further increase the overall sodium content.
Outback Steakhouse
The 10-count Hot Kookaburra Wings at Outback Steakhouse contain 4,470 mg of sodium, while the Sweet BBQ Wings are even higher at 5,170 mg. However, the Aussie Cheese Fries stand out as an extreme example, containing an astounding 9,330 mg of sodium, which is several times the daily recommended limit.
