Understanding Trulicity and Its Uses
Trulicity is a prescription medication designed to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Along with diet and exercise, this once-weekly injectable drug plays a crucial role in glycemic control. Additionally, it is prescribed to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes, in adults who have both type 2 diabetes and established heart disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.
The active ingredient in Trulicity is dulaglutide, which belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. It is a biologic medication, meaning it is derived from living organisms, and is currently only available under the brand name Trulicity.
How Trulicity Works in the Body
Trulicity mimics the action of natural hormones in the body to regulate blood glucose. When blood sugar levels rise, the medication stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, which helps transport glucose into cells for energy. It also slows down gastric emptying, preventing rapid spikes in blood sugar after meals. Furthermore, Trulicity decreases the secretion of glucagon, a hormone that prompts the liver to release stored sugar into the bloodstream.
Dosage and Administration Guidelines
Trulicity is administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week, ideally on the same day and at the same time. It comes in single-dose, prefilled injection pens, making self-administration straightforward. Common injection sites include the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, and it is recommended to rotate the injection site with each dose.
The standard starting dose is typically 0.75 mg once weekly. Depending on how the body responds and the level of blood sugar control achieved, a healthcare provider may gradually increase the dosage. The medication is available in strengths of 0.75 mg, 1.5 mg, 3 mg, and 4.5 mg, with 4.5 mg being the maximum weekly dose.
Potential Side Effects and Safety Warnings
Like most medications, Trulicity can cause side effects, ranging from mild to severe. The most common mild side effects are gastrointestinal in nature, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, constipation, and indigestion. These symptoms often subside within a few days or weeks as the body adjusts to the medication.
More serious side effects, though less common, can occur. These include acute pancreatitis, severe hypoglycemia (especially when used alongside other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas), kidney dysfunction, and gallbladder disease. Trulicity also carries a boxed warning regarding the potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma. Individuals with a personal or family history of this specific type of thyroid cancer should not use this medication.
Storage and Handling Instructions
To maintain its efficacy, Trulicity must be stored correctly. Unused injection pens should be kept in the refrigerator at temperatures between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C). If necessary, individual pens can be kept at room temperature, up to 86°F (30°C), for up to 14 days. Once a pen has been kept at room temperature for more than two weeks, it must be discarded safely.
