Ideal Sleep Temperatures for Babies and Older Adults

The ideal sleep temperature can vary significantly depending on age, with specific recommendations for infants and older adults to ensure restful and safe sleep.

Optimal Sleep Environment for Babies

For infants, maintaining a room temperature between 60°F and 68°F (16°C and 20°C) is generally recommended. While a slight increase of a degree or two might be considered, it’s crucial to avoid higher temperatures. Overheating in babies can elevate the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), making temperature regulation a key concern.

Infants require a slightly warmer environment than adults for a couple of reasons. Their bodies are not as efficient at regulating temperature, and they typically sleep with fewer covers to mitigate SIDS risk. Therefore, proper clothing is essential.

Dress your infant in a breathable sleeper and a sleep sack. Sleep sacks are available in various materials, allowing for seasonal adjustments to keep the baby comfortable. It is important to avoid placing a hat on an infant indoors, as this can interfere with their internal body temperature regulation and ability to cool down.

To check if your baby is too warm, gently touch the back of their neck or their stomach during sleep. If their skin feels hot or sweaty, remove a layer of clothing to help them cool down.

Ideal Sleep Temperatures for Older Adults

Research indicates that the optimal sleep temperature range for older adults is between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Within this range, sleep is found to be most efficient and restorative. Studies have shown a noticeable decrease in sleep efficiency, specifically a 5 to 10% drop, when room temperatures rise above 25°C (77°F).

This suggests that older adults may benefit from a slightly warmer sleeping environment compared to general recommendations, but still within a comfortable and controlled range to prevent sleep disturbances caused by excessive heat.
