Venclexta (Venetoclax): Uses, Treatment, and How It Works

What Is Venclexta and How Does It Work?

Anúncios

Venclexta is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient venetoclax. Classified as a B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) inhibitor, this targeted therapy offers a different approach compared to traditional chemotherapy. Instead of attacking all rapidly dividing cells in the body, Venclexta specifically targets and blocks a protein that allows cancer cells to survive, helping to induce cancer cell death.

Approved Uses for Venclexta

Venclexta is primarily prescribed for adults diagnosed with specific types of blood cancers. It is highly effective in treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). For these conditions, Venclexta can serve as a first-line treatment or be administered after other therapies have failed. It is frequently combined with BTK inhibitors such as Calquence (acalabrutinib) or Imbruvica (ibrutinib) to enhance efficacy.

Venclexta for Acute Myeloid Leukemia

In addition to leukemia and lymphoma, Venclexta is approved for treating newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It is prescribed in combination with chemotherapy drugs like azacitidine, decitabine, or low-dose cytarabine. This combination therapy is particularly beneficial for adults aged 75 or older, as well as individuals with underlying health conditions, such as heart or lung issues, who cannot tolerate intensive, high-dose chemotherapy.
