Spiriva FAQ: Usage, Cleaning, and Safety Guide

Can You Swallow Spiriva Capsules?

Anúncios

Spiriva capsules must never be swallowed. These capsules are designed exclusively for oral inhalation using the HandiHaler device. If swallowed, the medication passes through the digestive system instead of reaching the lungs, rendering it completely ineffective for treating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). To ensure safety, keep the capsules in their sealed blister packaging and only place them into the HandiHaler chamber immediately before use. If a capsule is accidentally swallowed, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center.

How to Clean and Dry Your Spiriva Inhaler

Regular maintenance of your Spiriva device is essential to prevent medication buildup, blockages, and contamination. However, you must avoid using detergents, cleaning agents, or hair dryers during the cleaning process.

For the Spiriva Respimat, clean the mouthpiece and its internal metal element at least once a week using a damp cloth or tissue. Do not rinse or submerge the Respimat device or cartridge in water.

For the Spiriva HandiHaler, rinse the entire open device under warm running water as needed. Press the green piercing button multiple times during rinsing to clear any residual powder or gelatin. Afterward, shake off excess water and let the device air-dry completely with the dust cap, mouthpiece, and base fully open. Never use the HandiHaler while it is still wet.

Spiriva Respimat Lifespan After Opening

A Spiriva Respimat inhaler must be discarded three months after its first use, or when the dose indicator enters the red zone, whichever occurs first. The device is designed to lock automatically once it is empty, which typically happens after delivering sixty full doses.
