Zetia, known generically as ezetimibe, is a prescription medication designed to help lower cholesterol levels in the blood. It is typically prescribed alongside a low-cholesterol diet and can be used alone or in combination with other cholesterol-lowering medications, such as statins.
How Zetia Works to Lower Cholesterol
Unlike statins, which reduce cholesterol production in the liver, Zetia belongs to a class of drugs called intestinal cholesterol blockers. It works by preventing the intestines from absorbing cholesterol from food and bile. This reduction in absorption prompts the body to clear excess cholesterol from the bloodstream, helping to manage conditions like primary hyperlipidemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and homozygous sitosterolemia.
Dosage and Administration Guidelines
Zetia is available as a 10 mg tablet taken orally once daily, with or without food. For optimal results, patients should take the medication consistently. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, but patients should never take more than one dose per day. It typically takes about two weeks of consistent use to see a noticeable reduction in cholesterol levels.
Understanding Potential Side Effects
While Zetia is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience side effects. Common mild side effects include joint pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and respiratory infections. When taken in combination with statins, some individuals report muscle aches or headaches.
Although rare, serious side effects can occur. These include severe muscle damage known as rhabdomyolysis and liver damage. Patients taking Zetia with a statin should have their liver enzymes monitored regularly through blood tests. Any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.
Important Warnings and Drug Interactions
Before starting Zetia, patients must discuss their medical history with a doctor, particularly if they have a history of liver or kidney disease, or thyroid issues like hypothyroidism. Zetia can interact with other medications, including fibrates, cyclosporine, and bile acid sequestrants. If taking a bile acid sequestrant, Zetia should be administered either two hours before or four hours after that medication to ensure proper absorption.
