Olumiant belongs to a class of medications called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. Unlike biologic drugs that are produced from living cells, Olumiant is a chemical-based small molecule. It works by targeting and blocking Janus kinase proteins, which act as chemical messengers within the immune system. By interrupting these signals, the medication helps reduce the systemic inflammation responsible for joint pain, hair loss, and severe respiratory complications.

For rheumatoid arthritis, Olumiant is prescribed when tumor necrosis factor blockers have not provided adequate relief. It helps alleviate joint swelling, pain, and stiffness. In cases of alopecia areata, it is indicated for adults experiencing severe hair loss, typically defined as losing fifty percent or more of scalp hair. For COVID-19, Olumiant is administered in hospital settings to patients requiring supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or other breathing support.

Olumiant is available in strengths of one, two, and four milligrams. The standard dosage is typically one tablet taken daily, with or without food. While patients treating rheumatoid arthritis or alopecia areata generally take the medication long-term, COVID-19 treatment is limited to a fourteen-day course or until hospital discharge. If swallowing tablets is difficult, healthcare providers can dissolve the tablet in water or administer it via a feeding tube in clinical settings.
Understanding Side Effects and Boxed Warnings
While Olumiant is highly effective, it carries several serious safety warnings. The medication features boxed warnings from regulatory authorities regarding the risk of serious infections, blood clots, cancer, major cardiovascular events, and an increased risk of death. Because it suppresses the immune system, patients are more susceptible to tuberculosis, shingles, and other opportunistic infections. Common mild side effects include nausea and upper respiratory tract infections.

Olumiant is cleared through the kidneys, meaning individuals with impaired kidney function may require dose adjustments, and those with severe kidney disease should avoid it.
