What is Taltz and How Does It Work?
Taltz (ixekizumab) is a prescription biologic medication designed to treat specific chronic inflammatory conditions. It is primarily prescribed for adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis. Additionally, it can be used to treat plaque psoriasis in pediatric patients aged six and older.
As a biologic drug, Taltz is made from living organisms and contains the active ingredient ixekizumab. It works by targeting and blocking interleukin-17A (IL-17A), a protein in the immune system that drives inflammation. By inhibiting this protein, the medication helps reduce skin plaques, joint pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with these inflammatory diseases.
Common and Serious Side Effects of Taltz
Like most biologic therapies, Taltz can cause side effects, ranging from mild to severe. The most frequently reported mild side effects include nausea, conjunctivitis, and localized injection site reactions such as redness, soreness, or swelling. These reactions are typically mild and resolve within a few days.
Because Taltz suppresses part of the immune system, it can increase the risk of infections, including upper respiratory tract infections and fungal infections. Although rare, serious infections like tuberculosis or pneumonia can occur. Other uncommon but serious risks include the development or worsening of inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, and severe allergic reactions.
Recommended Dosage and Administration
Taltz is administered as a subcutaneous injection under the skin using either a prefilled syringe or an autoinjector. The exact dosing schedule depends on the specific condition being treated. For plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, treatment typically begins with a loading dose of 160 mg, administered as two 80 mg injections. This is followed by regular maintenance doses of 80 mg at scheduled intervals, such as every two or four weeks.
Patients can perform self-injections at home after receiving proper training from a healthcare professional. Recommended injection sites include the front of the thighs, the abdomen, or the back of the upper arms. It is crucial to rotate injection sites to minimize the risk of localized skin irritation.
Important Precautions and Drug Interactions
Before starting treatment, patients should undergo screening for tuberculosis, as latent infections must be treated beforehand. It is also highly recommended to update all necessary vaccinations prior to beginning therapy. Live vaccines should be avoided entirely during treatment, as the weakened pathogens could cause serious infections due to the drug’s immunosuppressive effects.
Patients with a history of inflammatory bowel disease should use Taltz with caution, as it may exacerbate symptoms. While alcohol does not directly interact with the medication, it can worsen certain side effects like nausea and may trigger psoriasis flare-ups in some individuals.
